<p><b>Mohammed ibn Dschābir al-Battānī</b> (<bdo dir="ltr"><bdi dir="rtl" lang="ar" class="arabic spanAr" style="unicode-bidi:isolate;font-size:120%;">أبو عبد الله محمد بن جابر بن سنان الحراني الصابي البتاني</bdi></bdo>&nbsp;<i><span lang="ar-Latn" style="font-style:italic">Abū ʿAbdullāh Muhammad ibn Dschābir ibn Sinān al-Harrānī as-Sābī al-Battānī</span></i>, <a href="DIN_31635" title="DIN 31635">DMG</a> <i><span lang="ar-Latn" style="font-style:italic">Abū ʿAbdullāh Muḥammad ibn Ǧābir ibn Sinān al-Ḥarrānī aṣ-Ṣābī al-Battānī</span></i>), latinisiert <b>Albategnius</b> oder <b>Albatanius</b> (* etwa zwischen 850 und 869 in <a href="Harran" title="Harran">Harran</a> nahe <a href="%C5%9Eanl%C4%B1urfa" title="Şanlıurfa">Şanlıurfa</a> – heute <a href="T%C3%BCrkei" title="Türkei">Türkei</a>; † <a href="929" title="929">929</a> auf der Reise von <a href="Bagdad" title="Bagdad">Bagdad</a> nach <a href="Raqqa" class="mw-redirect" title="Raqqa">Raqqa</a> in Qasr al-Dschiss bei <a href="Samarra" title="Samarra">Samarra</a>) war ein arabischer Gelehrter und gilt als einer der größten <a href="Astronom" title="Astronom">Astronomen</a> im Nahen Osten.
</p><p>Al-Battānī vermittelte der arabischen Welt die Grundlagen der <a href="Geschichte_der_Mathematik" title="Geschichte der Mathematik">indischen Mathematik</a> (Lehrbuch „Retha Ganita“: <a href="Indische_Zahlen" class="mw-redirect" title="Indische Zahlen">indische Ziffern</a>, das Konzept der <a href="Null" title="Null">Null</a>, Grundlagen der <a href="Geometrie" title="Geometrie">Geometrie</a> und der <a href="Algebra" title="Algebra">Algebra</a>). Durch die Araber weiterentwickelt gelangten diese Grundlagen später nach Europa.

<div class="mw-heading mw-heading2"><h2 id="Leben">Leben</h2></div>
<p>Über al-Battānīs Leben ist wenig bekannt, er war vermutlich der Sohn des Instrumentenmachers Ǧābir ibn Sinān al-Ḥarrānī und stammte aus Ḥarrān in Südostanatolien, möglicherweise aus dem dortigen Stadtteil Battān.<sup id="cite_ref-vanDalen_1-0" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-vanDalen-1"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>1<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> Seine Familie in <a href="Harran" title="Harran">Harran</a> gehörte wohl den <a href="Sabier" title="Sabier">Sabiern</a> an, einem Sternenkult, der auf babylonische Traditionen zurückgeht. al-Battānī selbst muss im Laufe seines Lebens zum Islam konvertiert sein, darauf deutet zumindest die <i><a href="Kunya" title="Kunya">kunya</a></i> Abū ʿAbd Allāh hin.<sup id="cite_ref-vanDalen_1-1" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-vanDalen-1"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>1<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> Nach eigenen Angaben begann er im Jahr 264 H. (877) mit astronomischen Beobachtungen und führte diese bis 306 H. (918) fort.<sup id="cite_ref-:1_2-0" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-:1-2"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>2<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> Im Sommer 901 hielt er sich in <a href="Antiochia_am_Orontes" title="Antiochia am Orontes">Antiochia</a> auf, wo er eine Sonnen- und eine Mondfinsternis dokumentierte.<sup id="cite_ref-:1_2-1" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-:1-2"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>2<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup>
</p><p>Nach Ibn an-Nadīm lebte al-Battānī gegen Ende seines Lebens einige Zeit in Bagdad, um zur Beilegung von Ungerechtigkeiten gegenüber den Bānū al-Zayyāt beizutragen, und starb auf der Rückreise nach <a href="Ar-Raqqa" title="Ar-Raqqa">Raqqa</a> in Qasr al-Dschiss 317 H. (929).<sup id="cite_ref-vanDalen_1-2" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-vanDalen-1"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>1<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> In den arabischen Quellen finden sich keinerlei Belege für Zuschreibungen wie „Prinz von Arabien“ oder „König von Syrien“, wie sie in einigen frühen westlichen Editionen zu finden sind.<sup id="cite_ref-:1_2-2" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-:1-2"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>2<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup>

<p>Al-Battānī gilt als der bedeutendste<sup id="cite_ref-3" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-3"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>3<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup><sup id="cite_ref-4" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-4"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>4<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup><sup id="cite_ref-Ben-Menahem_5-0" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-Ben-Menahem-5"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>5<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> und berühmteste Astronom der mittelalterlichen islamischen Welt. Er machte genauere Beobachtungen des Nachthimmels als irgendeiner seiner Zeitgenossen<sup id="cite_ref-Angelo_6-0" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-Angelo-6"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>6<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> und war der erste aus einer neuen Generation islamischer Astronomen, die auf die Gründung des <a href="Haus_der_Weisheit_(Bagdad)" title="Haus der Weisheit (Bagdad)">Hauses der Weisheit</a> im 8. Jahrhundert folgte.<sup id="cite_ref-7" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-7"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>7<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> Seine akribisch beschriebenen Methoden ermöglichten anderen die Überprüfung seiner Ergebnisse, aber einige seiner Erklärungen zur Planetenbewegung sind vage und enthalten Fehler.<sup id="cite_ref-8" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-8"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>8<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup>
</p><p>Die Werke von al-Battānī, der zuweilen als „Ptolemäus der Araber“<sup id="cite_ref-9" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-9"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>9<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> bezeichnet wird, zeigen, dass er ein entschiedener Anhänger des <a href="Geozentrisches_Weltbild" title="Geozentrisches Weltbild">geozentrischen Weltbilds</a> von <a href="Claudius_Ptolem%C3%A4us" title="Claudius Ptolemäus">Ptolemäus</a> war. Er verbesserte die Beobachtungen aus dem <a href="Almagest" title="Almagest">Almagest</a> des Ptolemäus<sup id="cite_ref-Angelo_6-1" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-Angelo-6"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>6<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> und stellte neue Tabellen für Sonne und Mond zusammen, nachdem die früheren Tabellen lange Zeit als maßgeblich akzeptiert worden waren.<sup id="cite_ref-MacTutor_10-0" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-MacTutor-10"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>10<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> Al-Battānī errichtete in Raqqa sein eigenes Observatorium. Er empfahl für die astronomischen Instrumente eine Größe von mehr als 1&nbsp;m.<sup id="cite_ref-vanDalen_1-3" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-vanDalen-1"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>1<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> Solche Instrumente erreichten, weil sie größer waren und ihre Skalen kleinere Werte messen konnten, eine bis dahin nicht erreichte Genauigkeit.<sup id="cite_ref-11" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-11"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>11<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> Manche seiner Messungen waren genauer als die des Astronomen und Mathematikers <a href="Nikolaus_Kopernikus" title="Nikolaus Kopernikus">Nikolaus Kopernikus</a> während der <a href="Renaissance" title="Renaissance">Renaissance</a>. Als ein Grund dafür wird angenommen, dass al-Battānīs Beobachtungsort Raqqa näher am <a href="%C3%84quator" title="Äquator">Erdäquator</a> liegt, sodass die <a href="Ekliptik" title="Ekliptik">Ekliptik</a> und die Sonne höher am Himmel stehen und dadurch die Auswirkungen der <a href="Terrestrische_Refraktion" title="Terrestrische Refraktion">atmosphärischen Refraktion</a> geringer sind.<sup id="cite_ref-MacTutor_10-1" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-MacTutor-10"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>10<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> Die sorgfältige Konstruktion und Ausrichtung der astronomischen Instrumente ermöglichte bei <a href="%C3%84quinoktium" title="Äquinoktium">Äquinoktien</a> und <a href="Solstitium" class="mw-redirect" title="Solstitium">Solstitien</a> eine bisher unbekannte Beobachtungsgenauigkeit.<sup id="cite_ref-vanDalen_1-4" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-vanDalen-1"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>1<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup>
</p><p>Al-Battānī beobachtete als einer der ersten Astronomen, wie der Abstand zwischen Erde und Sonne im Lauf des Jahres variiert.<sup id="cite_ref-Angelo_6-2" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-Angelo-6"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>6<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup><sup id="cite_ref-12" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-12"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>12<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup><sup id="cite_ref-13" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-13"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>13<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> Diese Änderung ist neben der (stärkeren) Änderung des Abstandes Erde-Mond entscheidend für das Zustandekommen <a href="Sonnenfinsternis#Ringförmige_Sonnenfinsternis" title="Sonnenfinsternis">ringförmiger Sonnenfinsternisse</a>. Al-Battānī erkannte, dass die Position, an welcher der <a href="Scheinbare_Gr%C3%B6%C3%9Fe" title="Scheinbare Größe">Winkeldurchmesser</a> der Sonne den kleinsten Wert annahm, nicht mehr die gleiche war wie von Ptolemäus angegeben. Die <a href="Ekliptikale_L%C3%A4nge" title="Ekliptikale Länge">ekliptikale Länge</a> des <a href="Erdn%C3%A4he" title="Erdnähe">Apogäums</a> (des erdfernsten Punktes) hatte um 16°47′ zugenommen.<sup id="cite_ref-Ben-Menahem_5-1" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-Ben-Menahem-5"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>5<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup>
</p><p>Al-Battānī war ein hervorragender Beobachter.<sup id="cite_ref-14" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-14"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>14<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> Er verbesserte Ptolemäus’ Messung der <a href="Ekliptik#Die_Schiefe_der_Ekliptik" title="Ekliptik">Schiefe der Ekliptik</a> (Winkel zwischen den Ebenen von Äquator und Ekliptik)<sup id="cite_ref-Angelo_6-3" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-Angelo-6"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>6<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> und kam auf den Wert 23°35'<sup id="cite_ref-MacTutor_10-2" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-MacTutor-10"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>10<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup>; der akzeptierte Wert ist etwa 23,44°.<sup id="cite_ref-15" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-15"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>15<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> Al-Battānī gab auch ein Kriterium für die Beobachtung des zunehmenden Mondes an: In den ersten 24 Stunden nach der Konjunktion (dem Zeitpunkt übereinstimmender ekliptikaler Länge) ist der zunehmende Mond unsichtbar. Dies entspricht im Durchschnitt einer Längendifferenz von 12°11′ bzw. einem Unterschied von 48 Minuten 44 Sekunden bei den Untergangszeiten von Sonne und Mond.<sup id="cite_ref-16" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-16"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>16<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> Al-Battānīs Wert für die Länge des <a href="Tropisches_Jahr" title="Tropisches Jahr">tropischen Jahres</a> von 365 Tagen, 5 Stunden, 46 Minuten und 24 Sekunden weicht nur 2 Minuten und 22 Sekunden vom heute angegebenen Wert ab.<sup id="cite_ref-MacTutor_10-3" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-MacTutor-10"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>10<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup>
</p><p>Al-Battānī beobachtete, wie sich die Richtung des Apogäums der Sonne ändert, was schon Ptolemäus festgestellt hatte.<sup id="cite_ref-17" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-17"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>17<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> Als Ergebnis stellte er eine langsame zyklische Variation der <a href="Zeitgleichung" title="Zeitgleichung">Zeitgleichung</a> fest.<sup id="cite_ref-18" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-18"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>18<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> Durch sorgfältige Messungen der Zeitpunkte von Frühlings- und Herbst-Äquinoktium erhielt er für die <a href="Pr%C3%A4zession#Präzession_der_Erdachse" title="Präzession">Präzession</a> der Äquinoktien den Wert 54,5″ pro Jahr bzw. 1° in 66 Jahren<sup id="cite_ref-Angelo_6-4" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-Angelo-6"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>6<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup>. Er erkannte damit das Phänomen, dass sich die scheinbare Bewegung der Sonne durch die <a href="Sternbild" title="Sternbild">Sternbilder</a> des <a href="Zodiak" title="Zodiak">Tierkreises</a> allmählich ändert.<sup id="cite_ref-Angelo_6-5" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-Angelo-6"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>6<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup>
</p><p>Da al-Battānī Anhänger des geozentrischen Weltbilds war und von einer unbewegten Erde ausging, konnte er die wissenschaftlichen Gründe für seine Beobachtungen und die Bedeutung seiner Entdeckungen nicht verstehen.<sup id="cite_ref-Angelo_6-6" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-Angelo-6"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>6<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup>
</p>
<div class="mw-heading mw-heading2"><h2 id="Mathematik">Mathematik</h2></div>
<p>Einer der wichtigsten Beiträge von al-Battānī war seine Einführung des <a href="Sinus_und_Kosinus" title="Sinus und Kosinus">Sinus</a> und des <a href="Tangens_und_Kotangens" title="Tangens und Kotangens">Tangens</a> für <a href="Geometrie" title="Geometrie">geometrische</a> Berechnungen, insbesondere in der <a href="Sph%C3%A4rische_Trigonometrie" title="Sphärische Trigonometrie">sphärischen Trigonometrie</a>. Er ersetzte dadurch die geometrischen Methoden des Ptolemäus. Al-Battānīs Methoden gehörten zu den kompliziertesten mathematischen Verfahren, die bis zu dieser Zeit entwickelt wurden.<sup id="cite_ref-Angelo-78-79_19-0" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-Angelo-78-79-19"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>19<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> Er war sich der Überlegenheit der <a href="Trigonometrie" title="Trigonometrie">Trigonometrie</a> gegenüber der Verwendung von <a href="Sehne_(Geometrie)" title="Sehne (Geometrie)">Sehnentafeln</a> bewusst und demonstrierte das mit einer Beziehung zwischen den Seiten und Winkeln eines sphärischen Dreiecks, die heute als <a href="Kosinussatz#Kosinussatz_für_Kugeldreiecke" title="Kosinussatz">Seitenkosinussatz</a> bezeichnet wird:

<p>Al-Battānī benützte die Idee des Tangens, die auf den persischen Astronomen <a href="Habash_al-Hasib_al-Marwazi" class="mw-redirect" title="Habash al-Hasib al-Marwazi">Habash al-Hasib al-Marwazi</a> zurückgeht. Er entwickelte Gleichungen für das Rechnen damit und stellte Tabellen von Tangens- und Kotangenswerten zusammen. Er führte auch die <a href="Kehrwert" title="Kehrwert">reziproken Funktionen</a> von Sinus und Kosinus ein, nämlich Kosekans und Sekans. Er veröffentlichte die erste Tabelle von Kosekanswerten für Winkel von 1° bis 90° unter der Bezeichnung „Tabelle der Schatten“, in Anspielung auf den Schatten, den der Stab einer Sonnenuhr wirft.<sup id="cite_ref-Maor_20-1" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-Maor-20"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>20<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup>

<p>Unter Verwendung trigonometrischer Zusammenhänge entwickelte al-Battānī eine Gleichung zur Ermittlung der <a href="Qibla" title="Qibla">Qibla</a>, also der Richtung, die für Muslime bei den <a href="Sal%C4%81t" title="Salāt">fünf täglichen Gebeten</a> vorgeschrieben ist.<sup id="cite_ref-vanBrummelen_21-0" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-vanBrummelen-21"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>21<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup><sup id="cite_ref-22" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-22"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>22<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup>
Die Gleichung lieferte keine genauen Ergebnisse, da sie die Kugelgestalt der Erde nicht berücksichtigte. Immerhin war die Gleichung ausreichend genau für eine Person in <a href="Mekka" title="Mekka">Mekka</a> oder in der Nähe; daher war die Methode zu dieser Zeit recht verbreitet. </p><p>Ein kleines Werk zur Trigonometrie, <i>Tajrīd uṣūl tarkīb al-juyūb</i> („Zusammenfassung der Grundsätze für die Ermittlung von Sinuswerten“), ist bekannt. Der deutsche Orientalist <a href="Carl_Brockelmann" title="Carl Brockelmann">Carl Brockelmann</a> schrieb es dem persischen Astronomen <a href="Kushyar_ibn_Labban" title="Kushyar ibn Labban">Kushyar ibn Labban</a> zu, es ist aber ein Fragment aus al-Battānī's <i>zīj</i>. Das Manuskript befindet sich in <a href="Istanbul" title="Istanbul">Istanbul</a> als MS Carullah 1499/3.<sup id="cite_ref-23" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-23"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>23<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> Die Authentizität wurde allerdings in Frage gestellt, denn Wissenschaftler gehen davon aus, dass Battānī nicht den Ausdruck „al-juyūb“ für den Sinus in den Titel aufgenommen hätte.<sup id="cite_ref-vanDalen_1-5" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-vanDalen-1"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>1<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup>

<p>Al-Battānīs astronomische Tafeln (Zidsch al-Sabi) sind die frühesten erhaltenen Sterntafeln, die fast vollständig auf ptolemäischer Astronomie fußen. Auf Lateinisch wurden sie unter dem Titel <i>Scientia Stellarum</i> erstmals im Jahr 1537 in <a href="N%C3%BCrnberg" title="Nürnberg">Nürnberg</a> gedruckt.
